  1. In mathematics, the value, or magnitude, of a
  2. number irrespective of its sign (denoted
  3. |n|), and defined as the positive square root
  4. of n^2. It is often referred to as the
  5. modulus of n, written mod n. For example, 5
  6. and -5 have the same absolute value:
  7. |5| = |-5| = 5. For a complex number, the
  8. absolute value is its distance to the origin
  9. when it is plotted on an Argand diagram, and
  10. can be calculated (without plotting) by
  11. applying the Pythagorean theorem. By
  12. definition, the absolute value of any complex
  13. number a + bi is given by the expression |a +
  14. bi| = `sqrt'(a^2 + b^2).
